Air Defense, Spells, and Buildings: Covering the Essential Roles

Audit the defensive jobs in your deck so one missing answer does not decide the match before it starts.

Eight slots create hard choices. You cannot counter every card perfectly, but you can make sure the deck has a credible response to the broad threats you will meet: air, tanks, swarms, support units, and direct tower pressure.

Build layered air defense

One fragile ranged unit is rarely enough. Combine two or more cards that can target air, ideally with different weaknesses. A ranged troop plus an air-targeting building or versatile support unit makes it harder for one spell to remove every answer.

Give each spell a purpose

Small spells clear light swarms and reset or knock back certain defenders. Medium and heavy spells remove support units, damage buildings, or finish towers. Two spells can work well when their target groups differ; duplicate coverage may leave too few troops.

Decide whether you need a building

Buildings pull tower-targeting troops and shape pathing, but they are not mandatory in every archetype. If you skip one, identify the troop combination, control effect, or high-damage defender that fills the same job. Do not leave the question unanswered.

Test the defensive hand

Imagine four situations: a fast bridge attack, a large tank push, an air push, and a swarm around a win condition. For each, name a realistic defense that does not require your whole elixir bar. Clash Decks analysis can highlight missing roles before a match exposes them.
